Laser Denistry

With lasers, Harris Dental offers an expanded range of treatments with better efficiency.

There are three classes of lasers in use in dentistry: diagnostic, soft tissue and hard tissue lasers. We use both the soft (gum) and hard tissue (tooth) lasers.

Soft Tissue lasers are called Diode Lasers. Their main use is tidying up gum margins when doing filling or crown work, but also for sterilising infected and diseased gums.

Laser dentistry offers:

  • Less anaesthetic for a more relaxed dental experience. Some fillings (generally small surface restorations) can be done without local anaesthetic.
  • Reduced symptoms and healing times.
  • More effective sterilisation of root canals.
  • Gum surgery and benign tumour removal without sutures.
  • Reduction of gummy smile by reshaping gum tissue to expose healthy tooth structure.
  • Crown lengthening.

Hard Tissue lasers are bigger machines and consequently more expensive to purchase. They have expanded roles in all aspects of dentistry from cavity preparation, and gum surgery to aiding in root canal procedures. They are frequently used as an adjunct to conventional dental treatments.

In keeping with the high-tech nature of our dental practice, we were amongst the first to integrate lasers into our practice in Christchurch and remain the only practice with a hard tissue laser that is capable of tooth preparation for dental work.
